A first half header from our English center back was just enough to secure maximum points from our first International Champions Cup game against Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool.
The starting XI featured a return to the team for Cahill,Azplicueta and Fabregas who played no part during our Austrian Tour.Ola Aina,Gary Cahill,John Terry and Cesar Azplicueta formed an impressive back line in front of the goal with Begovic between the sticks.
Chelsea got on the front foot against a team who has had more minutes of pre-season action and were rewarded by Cahill's brilliant header from a Fabregas free kick.Our opponents threatened to equalize via a Coutinho strike from the edge of the area but Begovic was on hand to deliver a superb save.Firmino's goal that was correctly ruled out for offside was the closest the Merseyside outfit got to leveling matters in the first half.
Liverpool made a string off changes early in the second period with veterans James Milner and Jordan Henderson coming on in midfield.Nemanja Matic was impressive throughout the game and was unfortunate to have his midfield pair Cesc Fabregas sent off with twenty minutes left on the clock for a foul on Ragnar Klavan.Pedro,Cuadrado and Batshuayi were brought on for Traore,Willian and the ever effective Victor Moses.
A lot of resolute defending was needed after Fabregas red card,but the blues were equal to the task putting in a reflection of Antonio Conte's tactics to seal a thoroughly deserved three points.
