Diego Costa's fifth goal of the season was not enough as the blues lost their first competitive game under Antonio Conte loosing narrowly to the side from Anfield in a tightly contested affair.
Conte named a nearly unchanged XI for the third game running with only debutant David Luiz deputising for skipper John Terry who missed out through injury.
The Red's put in a dominant performance to race on to a 2:0 lead in the first half courtesy of well taken goals by Dejan Lovren and Jordan Henderson who beat Thibaut Courtois with an angled shot from twenty three yards.
The blues were more lively after the restart as their effort was rewarded with a lifeline goal from Diego Costa fir his fifth goal of the campaign. Courtois was on hand to deny Divock Origi in the closing stages as Chelsea chased an equalizer.Three substitutes were brought on with Cesc Fabregas among those coming on.The Spaniard had a penalty shout waved on after his free kick had hit a hand in the Liverpool wall.
The Red's however hanged on to inflict a first competitive game loss on Conte's charges who face Leicester City next week.
