Sunderland 3 vs 2 Chelsea Match Report

The blues were narrowly defeated in a thrilling encounter which saw John Terry being sent off at the latter stages of the match after receiving a second book.
The blues XI featured returnee Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois who had missed two matches following his red card against City. In-form black cats striker Defoe started in attack with Diego Costa who was impressive last time out also starting. There was also a return to Stamford bridge for Former blue Van Annholt.
Gary Cahill was booked only after 43 seconds following a challenge on Defoe. With the blues controlling proceedings subsequently Fabregas threaded a ball to Willian who shot with his weaker foot straight at Mannone. However the blues would race on to the lead after a stray pass from Cahill found Costa who made no mistake in slotting home from a tight angle. The home side however proved more dangerous on the counter as Cahill was quick to terminate a counter when the home team attacked with only three blue defenders left at the back. Courtois also saved a Yedlin header from Defoe's cross. Terry clattered into Borini on an aerial duel with both requiring treatment.Westhoff shot too close to Courtois before the home side scored in the 41st minute with a wonderful volley from Khazri to the far corner. The blues would however restore there lead just on the stroke of halftime with Azplicueta heading a pass onto the path of Matic who kept cool to slot in through Mannone's legs.
Mannone denied Costa early in the second half with a superb save from which Sunderland broke out on a counter through Defoe who was denied by a last ditch Cahill tackle. Cattermole was shown a yellow card for a foul on the lively Hazard who combined with Fabregas to tee up Costa,the striker missed the chance to extend the lead by shooting straight at Mannone. The missed chances came hunting as Sunderland equalized through Borini and then took the lead through Defoe in the space of three minutes owing to defensive errors after Ivanovic had been replaced by Baba Rahman.Mannone saved a Willian free-kick as the blues searched for an equaliser leaving the defence exposed with Oscar and Traore were
brought on to help salvage a point. John Terry was sent off after two late challenges in the dying stages as Sunderland held on to three precious points that could prove decisive in their relegation battle.
