European Blues : Round 16 Review


The blues had six representative players when the draws for the round of 16 were made but only two players made it to the next round following some shocking results highlighting the unpredictability of the round leather game.
Eden Hazard delivered a man of the match performance as Belgium cruised to the quarter finals with a 4:0 thumping of Hungary.The Belgium captain laid on an assist for Michy Batshuayi in the 78th minute and scored in the next minute with a fine solo effort to cap off a fine evening that he shone brightly throughout.

Thibaut Courtois also recorded a third consecutive shut out with the most notable a one handed save (pictured above)after Pinter's shot deflected off Alderweireld. Belgium will now play Wales on Friday in Lille with a place in the semi finals on the cards.

Antonio Conte master minded Spain's Euro 2016 exit with a 2:0 scoreline. Chiellini opened the scoring from close range in the 33rd minute against Spain who had Cesc Fabregas on parade,tucking in from close range as De Gea parried an Eder free-kick.Pedro was brought on with Spain chasing an equalizer which they never got until they were caught on a counter attack finished swiftly by Grazziano Pelle to dump the reigning champions out and set a date with Germany who recorded a 3:0 victory over Slovakia.Cesar Azplicueta was an unused substitute.
Gary Cahill played all of England's shocking 2:1 defeat to Iceland who were playing in their first ever round of 16 match at a major tournament.Wayne Rooney gave England the lead from the spot in the fourth minute only for the Icelanders to equalize two minutes later courtesy of a Sigurdson strike. Sigborsson gave Iceland the lead in the eighteenth  minute which they saw out with resolute defending to continue their dream tournament have finished above Portugal at the group stage.
